Esther Bunning has been creating beautiful images for over 30 years and is regarded as one of New Zealand’s leading portrait photographers. Her work is instantly recognisable for its dreamy, quietly magical quality and deeply personal feel, often revealing layers that might otherwise go unseen.

My photography spans a beautiful mix of worlds - from fine art florals/one-of-a-kind silk landscapes and personal taonga artworks - to portraits that capture the real, beautiful, complex sides of people. I love creating images that tell a story, whether it’s personal and intimate portraits, family moments, or business and corporate branding. It’s all the roles we play in life.
I’m especially passionate about working with women, and my approach is beautiful and intuitive, and deeply personal. I take the time to really see you - not just how you look, but who you are - so you can relax into the experience and feel genuinely comfortable in front of the camera. I don’t rely on formulas, trends, repeatable poses or locations. Instead, I respond to you in the moment, using light, texture, movement, and storytelling to create images that feel honest and emotionally resonant. The result is work that’s not just beautiful, but layered with heart, character, and meaning. Every image is made from scratch - original, intentional, and unmistakably you.
